Grand Prize Winner

The Bestop Grand Prize winning photograph and story was sent by Melissa Fischer of Draper, UT. Melissa will receive a Rocky Mountain Adventure for Two along with story coverage in Bestop's National Ad campaign for 2008.

Melissa's story: "This is probably not your typical Bestop story, but we had the opportunity to use a Bestop to help save a man's life. During the Off-Road Adventure Run during Easter Week in Moab, a man shooting photos jumped off of a rock when it started to slide and broke his leg. Being a nurse, my friend called me over to help. As soon as I pressed against his jeans, it was obvious that the bone was very near the skin. He could not be moved without creating a splint. My friend drives a CJ-7 and realized that the metal door pieces of his Bestop might work. He brought them to me and using pieces of duct tape, I secured his leg. The pieces fit perfectly and created a sturdy splint. Using a strap and man power, he was lowered down the hill and into a waiting JK. The next day, I visited him at the hospital where I took the attached picture. He had fractured both bones in his lower leg. The Moab ER physician told him that without the splint, the bone would surely have broken through the skin. I only use a Bestop on my Jeep and have both a regular soft top and a Bikini®. Thanks Bestop for your great design!"

Finalist: Jason Biehl of Ypsilanti, MI.

Jason's story: "For a little get away, I got with my neighbor and planned a camping trip in northern Michigan, wanting to go where no one would be around. Soon, I had my dad and brother along in my dad's XJ. We left from Detroit, crossing the Mackinac Bridge on our way to Whitefish Point, right on Lake Superior, where we had planned on leaving the pavement. It was at that point it started to rain pretty good. Even though it was June (of 2007) it's still fairly cold at the shore of "the big lake" even then. Still, my Bestop top kept the rain out and the heat in, taking many branches along the way as we wheeled our way out near the old Virmillion Point life saving station (abandoned) where it stopped raining. We had a fantastic time, only visited by deer, bear, and puma over the course of 3 days. Thanks for a great product (one of many I own)."

Finalist: Don McDowell of Littleton, CO.

Don's story: "A Bestop top has been on each of the Jeeps I've owned including a 1947 Willys, 1971 and 1973 CJ5's, 1997 TJ and two 2001 TJ's. They have all done their job extremely well and have been used and abused regularly. My favorite is the Sunrider® model of which I currently have on our 1997 and 2001 TJ's. They fit perfectly and are extremely easy to put up/down and allow us to have the true Jeep feeling when wheeling...having the top and windshield DOWN is best! Last year I bought an Extendatrunk™ and it's been a perfect addition. It keeps our 'stuff' safe and enclosed while on the way to the trail and ON the trail. We do some serious rock climbing and it's good to know nothing is going to be flying around when we're in those touchy situations. Our two dogs (75 and 55 lbs sit on top of the Extendatrunk™ (on a large dog pillow) when we're not in dangerous situations. Finally.... Bestop (the company) has been absolutely super in helping me order the right misc. top parts (clamps, etc.) that I've damaged on the trail and needed to replace. Another think I LOVE is the online installation guides...I don't know of any other company who does it better than Bestop. Next Bestop purchase? I'm saving up for the Element™ Doors! Functionality is foremost, then ruggedness, then cost, then LOOKS. In the case of the Element™ Doors those 4 things are tied for first place. I have to admit I'd probably buy them just for the looks though! Thanks for the hard work...and the solid product reputation. I don't look anywhere else."
